Attentive UI

By Matt Perez

UIs have gone from functional, to graphical, to responsive, to gestures. The Attentive UI is what comes next.

Intro

Graphical UIs have gone from functional very basic, to graphical, to gesture, to responsive.

The Attentive UI is what comes next. As the user works with the US, it auto-morphs to make the UI fit the user’s behavior. This could be as simple as rearranging menus and making the most used items easier to reach in a given context. For example, with Photoshop, I may use the brush tool a lot in one case (painting), and I may not use it at all in others.

Impact
What for?
  • UIs adapt to each user and lower the cognitive load of using computers.
  • The UI is responsive to each user’s actual use and development teams don’t have to worry (as much) about how to order their menus.
Purpose
Why?
  • Let people do their thing by making the UI less obtrusive.
Mission
What?
When?
How?
  • Create an Attentive framework for apps to support morphing their UI dynamically.
  • Create an Attentive Machine Learning (AML) engine to watch people’s behavior when using a UI.
  • Use the AML results to modify the UI via the Attentive framework.
